Chapter 5-
*****

Dimitri was there and waiting in his armor. His cat-like ears twitched and his tail swayed beneath his large predator wings. He was extending and retracting the claws of his paws, waiting to be annoyed.

"Hello love." Yuri strode through the dark and under the streetlamp. He wore his corset over his armor, as usual, even that irritated Dimitri.

"Hello." Dimitri stated with a slight growl. "You're three minutes late."

"Point being, sweetheart?"

"You should be at your post on time. Now, let's just get this over with."

"Over with? Why? We have all night, and we're doomed to be partners until Reina says otherwise."

"I am aware of that. But if I think about it as one night at a time, the less I want to commit suicide."

Yuri laughed, throwing an arm around Dimitri easily. When the other Daywalker twitched away from him, he smiled inwardly. Dimitri glared at him and began walking their post.

"You have a nice ass." Yuri stated, watching Dimitri stalk away.

"What?"

"You have a nice ass." He repeated with a smirk.

Dimitri looked at him with an odd expression. "Okay..."

You're not much for accepting compliments, are you, love?"

"From you, yes."

"Hehe… aww." He snickered at Dimitri's expression. "You're cute when you're pissed off at me."

"Ah... okay." He scratched behind his ear, more confused by Yuri than annoyed. Yuri himself was slightly confused at Dimitri's reaction, but kept up the flirtations. His big eyes watched the other Daywalker like a puppy, and he linked arms with Dimitri, grinning. The other was completely and utterly confused. "You are definitely an odd one."

"Why thankee, sweetheart."

Dimitri actually smirked a bit. "I thought you would be proud of that."

"Of course." Yuri bowed, taking Dimitri's paw in his.

"Why are you holding my paw?" He asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Well it's not because you can't cross the street on your own..." Yuri laughed.

Dimitri shook his head. "Fine."

Yuri could not believe Dimitri wasn't at least trying to pull away. It seemed he needed to use more desperate measures. They walked in silence for a few moments before Yuri stopped him, turned him around and kissed him. Dimitri blinked and froze. The blonde Daywalker wrapped his arms around Dimitri's waist, waiting for him to jump away.

Slowly, Dimitri slid his own arms around Yuri and then kissed back Yuri's eyes opened with shock as he felt Dimitri respond. A second of complete surprise passed, and he closed his eyes again, giving in to the embrace happily. Dimitri’s wings surrounded him as they kissed each other passionately. Dimitri’s tail swayed happily and he was almost ready to purr when they both pulled away. Yuri was breathless.

Dimitri blinked and realized what he done. "Ah..."

Yuri grinned, "Well, that was unexpected..."

A slight blush crossed Dimitri's face. "Ah... we should get back to our post."

"Sure." Yuri was trying so hard to keep from laughing, but it wasn't really working. Dimitri's ears went back as he pulled away from Yuri; like a cat does when it is sad.

"I saw that." Yuri giggled, leaning against the wall of a house to keep from falling over. "You don't want to keep patrolling?"

"What?"

"Your ears." He grinned, pointing.

"What about them?" Dimitri stated defensively as he looked away.

Yuri shook his head, "Nevermind."

The rest of the evening went by well for Yuri; it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. Dimitri kept to himself, and didn't talk at all. And Yuri was amused and left the other Daywalker alone for now. He couldn't wait to go tell Syric about all that happened. Finally, the sun began to rise and Dimitri was quick to go home and report. Yuri quickly went to wake up Syric.

"Syyyric!" he opened his door without knocking. Syric was already asleep and threw the covers over his head.
Yuri shook him, then sat on the edge of the bed, laughing.

Syric glared at him, his hair a complete mess. "What?"

Yuri smoothed down his ex's hair as he giggled. “Guess what happened."

"I don't know. You're so happy it's scary."

"Well..." Yuri stopped and sat silently for almost a minute.

Syric gave him a weird look. "You didn't kill Dimitri... did you?"

"What? No." His eyes were a bit confused. "But the flirting idea didn't work as planned."

"Oh. That's why you woke me up? It could have waited for breakfast?"

"No..."

"Then what is it so I can go back to sleep!" Syric stated annoyed and grumpy.

"I kissed him."

"Yeah, and he freaked..."

"Ah, no... he... kissed me back."

"What!"

Yuri grinned and fell back onto the bed, "Yeah."

Syric blinked confused. "Wait a second. You two hate each other."

"Well..." Yuri blinked. "This is where I'm confused."

He turned to look at Syric, and the younger Daywalker could see the confusion in his blue eyes. Syric had to ask, "You like him now?"

"Ahh... I don't know, love."

"And his reaction... I mean Dimitri hasn't shown interest in any male or female in his life. I mean it's just weird he kissed you back."

Yuri sighed. After a few minutes, the older Daywalker stood up and went to the door. "G'night Syric."

“Night” Syric mumbled. Yuri left quietly, going to his room and collapsing on his bed to think. Syric blinked and then shrugged, falling back on his bed and going back to sleep.

*****

"Syric!" Yuri kicked his door open, leaving a hoof-shaped indent in the wood. He carried a tray of breakfast. Syric mumbled and hid his head under his pillow. The young Daywalker was never a morning person.

"Awww, poor Sy-sy." Yuri put the tray on a small table and went to stand beside Syric. An evil smirk crossed his face and he grabbed his ex's leg and pulled him out of his bed. Yuri got pummeled with Syric's pillow. "I promised to make you breakfast, love. But I can change my mind if you're going to get violent."

Syric was still half-asleep, but stopped as his head hit the floor. "Ow!"

"Awww, poor baby." Yuri hoisted him up and let him sit on the edge of his bed.

He slowly opened his eyes as he rubbed his head. Groggily, "You didn't have to be so cruel."

"Sorry love." Yuri kissed the top of his head. Syric rubbed his eyes and yawned. "I'll wake up Claire, you eat."

"Okay." He did as he was instructed.

"Claire! Wake up!" Yuri sang, knocking once before stepping in, using the doorknob this time. He crossed to the closet, picked out a corset and a ruffled skirt for her. The he tossed them over the back of a chair.

"Hmm?" She managed, yawning widely.

"Up!" He insisted and then smirked. "You can get dressed on your own, or do you want help?"

"I can dress myself." She said swiftly.

"Right. Breakfast is in Syric's room. Come in when you're ready." Yuri left her and went back to Syric's chambers.

"Syric?" He kicked open the door again. He was lying back asleep again.

"Syric!!" Yuri shook him violently.

Syric pouted as he opened his eyes. "Three more... minutes..."

"Claire's coming in a few moments, love. Get up."

"Do I have to?"

"Unless you want her to see you naked?" Yuri grinned.

"What?" That woke him up.

"At least get dressed." Yuri mumbled as Syric rolled out of bed, to his closet.

"Good boy." Yuri sat on Syric's bed, pleased with himself. Syric got dressed in a long sleeved white shirt and black slacks.

"Hot, as always. You should see Claire's outfit." The older Daywalker chuckled. Just then, Claire knocked on the door, pushing it open slowly. Her skirt was black with red layers underneath, and a red sash wound around her waist. The burgundy corset was low-cut and tight at the waist.

"Your mouth is open, Sy-sy." Yuri grinned.

Syric quickly fixed his open jaw and blushed with a smile. "You look beautiful, Miss Claire. Good Morning."

"Thank you, Syric." She smiled. "Morning. Morning Yuri."

"Morning Lady. Like your outfit?"

She nodded, her hands fiddling with her sash, "Yes."
"Figures you put her in a corset." Syric added darkly.

"Of course, just for you." Yuri winked at the younger Daywalker.

"Me?" Syric quickly blushed and ran a hand through his hair. Yuri shot him a sly grin. Claire flushed and played with her sash more.

Yuri grinned and went to the table, "Breakfast's getting cold, sweethearts. Eat."

They silently got their plates and ate. Yuri drank coffee and watched them eat, "So, you like?"

"It's very good, Yuri." Claire grinned at him, and then remembered about his shift with Dimitri last night, "So, what happened last night? Did he drive you crazy?"

"Ahh... not really. He was mostly very quiet." Syric chocked on his breakfast a bit at that comment from the older Daywalker. Yuri sent him a warning glare.

Claire saw this. "What is it?"

"Nothing." Yuri said, looking innocent. Syric ate another bite of food quickly as Yuri nodded. "That's right, Sy-sy."

Syric glared at him, now finally realizing what Yuri was calling him by. He swallowed his bite. "Don't call me that."

"Sorry hun." Yuri grinned. Syric took another bite of food, although still annoyed with Yuri calling him by his old nickname. Yuri noticed this, going to sit behind his ex and wrapping his arms around his waist. Syric again choked on his food. He sent a glare over his shoulder. Yuri's grinning face met his glare and the older Daywalker snuggled into his shoulder.

The young Daywalker sighed. "Yuri."

"Yes?"

He wined pleadingly, "Why?"

"Why what?"

"You've been clinging to me a lot lately..."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I love you too much to stay away?" Yuri questioned. Claire laughed through a mouthful of breakfast, giggling at Yuri's antics. Syric looked at her and blinked. He seriously thought she would be disgusted by the idea of two men liking each other. But it seemed to amuse her.

"Alright, you two, I think I'm going to visit my brother and then take a nap. It's been a few days since my last night's sleep."

"Okay." Syric took another bite after he said that.

"See you both later." He unwrapped himself from around Syric and left them both sitting together over a mostly eaten breakfast.

"Bye Yuri!" Claire called as he went.

"Bye, too. I'll see you later." Syric smiled and waved at him with a spoon in his mouth. Claire smiled and finished her food. Syric was quiet as he ate. He had to admit he liked her, maybe even more than he liked to admit. But he was a Daywalker now, and she was just a Human. In all reality, they could never be more than friends.

Claire stood with her plate in hand. "So, what are we going to do today, or do you have something to do?"

Syric smiled. "I never have anything to do. Reina refuses to give me a patrol."

"Why?" She thought back. "But you were there with Yuri..."

"I snuck out to be there with Yuri. I think the only reason why she hasn't said anything was because I killed a Nightwalker. Reina adores Yuri."

Claire smiled. "Well, they both have their similarities, from what I saw."

"Yeah... I guess. Yuri is tolerable though. Reina is just annoying." Claire frowned at his words, but did not say anything. He was quiet again. The thoughts of his mother bringing back dark memories that he never wanted to remember again but couldn't seem to avoid.

"So... what's happening then?"

"Hm..." A smirk crossed his face. "How about archery lessons?"

Claire blushed. "Ah... only if you wear armor or something."

"Well I will be next to you, not the target."

"Yuri wasn't really the target either."

Syric shrugged. "But it was funny, so it was easily forgiven."

She laughed, her blush disappearing. "Alright."

"Besides, you might be needed one day. I could feel safer if I knew you could protect yourself."

She nodded. "Or at least accidentally shoot someone?"

He laughed. "Well Yuri will make sure he is out of that fray then"

The Human nodded, laughing.

"And maybe we could get some rapier training in too. You did fairly well yesterday."

"Not really. I picked it up and Danya took it away." She grinned. "Shall we go?"

"Sure." She smiled more as he quickly led her by the arm to the arena. After several hours of archery practice, without anyone getting harmed, Claire felt a bit more confident.

"I think I might be getting the hang of this." She smiled.

"All you need is practice." He gave her a big winning smile. "How about tomorrow we'll do sword practice. Maybe even get you to use two blades."

She smiled nervously, "Alright, Syric."

He grew concerned and tilted his head in confusion. *Just like a little puppy* she thought to herself.

"That wasn't a very confident smile there... Are you okay, Miss Claire? Everything okay?" He was truly concerned for her wellbeing, especially since she seemed to take the loss of her family so well. He was worried that she truly wasn't happy.

"I'm alright. I'm not incredibly confident that I could use a blade with any skill, but I'm alright otherwise." She giggled.

He smiled, relieved. "That's okay. All you need is practice really. I'll teach you, Miss Claire."

He gave her a quick kiss on the forehead. "Well, are you hungry, Miss Claire? It looks like we'll be eating without Yuri."

"Yeah, training makes me hungry." She patted her belly. He let out a soft chuckle as her led her out of the training arena.

Alright, didn't find too much here. As a matter of fact, what you asked me to look for is hardly showing up. Your character interactions are good as-is, along with the flow of the story. However, I am finding a problem of using too many modern terms which are damaging to the setting.

You did okay for this one though as I found very few of those 'modern sayings.' I speak from experience: if you use too many of them in a classical fantasy setting, such as this story, it will ruin the setting. I also have seen lots of good ideas and superb characters in a story, but it was ruined because of the modern dialogue. Sure, one or two pieces of those words are okay, but when they get to be a lot, then you've got a problem. Sadly, this is becoming one for the story. Everything else looks good so far.

Anyway how I deal with this is by reading the dialogue aloud by myself, or having a friend do it, like we're actors. Hearing what is being said really helps when determining something like this. I found it incredibly useful for normal dialogue in my own work. When you do, try thinking about the timeframe and setting. Does it sound believable and appropriate? If it does, leave it in. Otherwise, edit it until it does. If you have questions about this or would like some help making it fit the setting more, please note me and I'll see what I can do.

Anyway. Like I said on the last one. Every time I see a semi-colon, I'm gonna point it out. Found two here:
pulled away from Yuri;
went by well for Yuri;

Okay, other than what I said about the modern stuff, it is coming along nicely and is entertaining (which it is quite clear what you were going for so congrats!).

Saw one thing that might be handy though:

"Sure." She smiled more as he quickly led her by the arm to the arena. After several hours of archery practice, without anyone getting harmed, Claire felt a bit more confident.

These two sentances would be a perfect place for a paragraph break. I treat most paragraph breaks as 'scene-changers' like in movies. Just an idea though.

Alright, next chapter!
